ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, November 20th 2014

The Abu Dhabi Police represented by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, intensified traffic safety awareness initiatives ahead of the 43rd National Day festivities under the theme: "Let's Celebrate the Spirit of the Union without Violations". The directorate stressed the importance of civilized cooperation with the public while celebrating this auspicious national event. Moreover, it called on the public to abide by traffic laws, the instructions of the traffic and patrols officers, and the car decoration guidelines set out by the directorate.

Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, noted that the National Day awareness campaign features a wide variety of programs, which will be made publicized through the various media and social networking sites. “The directorate will also organize lectures and distribute roll-up banners and flyers to highlight the National Day car decoration guidelines across the malls. The awareness campaign will also include field operations carried out by the traffic patrols and the 'Tathqeef' education patrols in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region,” added Colonel Mohammed.

Furthermore, Colonel Mohammed urged motorists and revelers to abide by the rules on car decoration and to celebrate in a befitting manner that is suitable for the level of the UAE’s modernity and development. He also called on them to observe traffic laws; to behave in a manner that embodies the deep meaning of this auspicious occasion and to keep the festivities safe and accidents-free.

Adding further, the Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, appealed to drivers to keep up the positive and civilized spirit of cooperation that prevailed last year during the car parade organized at Yas Island to mark the UAE 42nd National Day. “Hundreds of cars decorated in the colors of the UAE national flag took part in the parade and demonstrated commitment and respect to traffic laws and the traffic patrols’ instructions set out on the occasion, which allowed exhilarating and joyful celebrations ,” said Mohammed.

On the same note, he urged motorists to abide by the permitted period for car decorating, commencing on the 22nd of November and concluding on the 6th of December. Colonel Mohammed encouraged motorists to get actively involved in the efforts to provide traffic safety during the National Day festivities and to report any traffic violations committed by drivers on various roads, “These violations include any attempts to show-off with vehicles, reckless driving, overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road, jumping red light signals and other violations,” explained Colonel Mohammed.

Colonel Mohammed noted that the directorate will be receiving documented reports from the public about cases of traffic law violations, chaos, nuisance and violations of celebration guidelines committed by motorists through the Abu Dhabi e-Government application called CityGuard. “The app enables users to take pictures of videos of the issue. It is necessary to indicate the number and type of vehicle, location and time of violation and the street where it took place,” he said. Moreover, he added that the reports will be handled with confidentiality without disclosing the identity of individuals who made them, to check their validity and take the appropriate measures.

He added: “The Traffic and Patrols Directorate has circulated a list of guidelines on car decoration during the National Day celebrations. The basic rules include not changing the color of the vehicle and posting inappropriate and/or obscene words and phrases on the car’s body. The directorate also prohibited vehicles from carrying more than the permitted number of people and warned passengers against sticking any part of their body out of the vehicle. Obscuring the windshield and front-door windows with tint or sprays is also prohibited.  The Directorate warned motorists against stopping their vehicles in the middle of the road, and encouraged all segments of society to support the efforts exerted to reduce the negative behaviors of young people”.

The Abu Dhabi Police confirmed that it will implement Article 1 of the Traffic Law – ‘Driving recklessly or in a manner that endangers the public’. Failure to abide by these rules will result in the impounding the vehicle for a month, in addition to a fine of Dh2,000 and 12 black points.
