52,000 Benefited from 500 Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate Awareness Programs in 9 months

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, November 9th 2014

An estimated 52,000 individuals have benefited from 500 awareness programs organized by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police in the past nine months of 2014. The objectives of the programs focus on promoting traffic safety culture amongst drivers, supervisors, and students in the educational field in both public and private sectors. The aim is to promote traffic safety and to limit all causes of accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries resulting from such incidents.

Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police, noted that the programs included awareness lectures and the distribution of traffic publications. He said, “The programs have included spreading traffic awareness through traffic education patrols with the aim of implementing field campaigns on various roads in order to increase the awareness levels of drivers, to provide them with the proper advice and guidelines, and to allow the public to have access to the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate's awareness program ‘Together’ - which was launched on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.” He noted that this aims to promote and support traffic awareness in order to elevate the level of traffic safety culture amongst all societal segments.

Lt. Colonel Al Ameri stressed that the responsibility of traffic safety is not limited to only one segment of society- it is the responsibility of the entire society to limit accidents. He said, “Parents need to monitor their children and encourage them to abide by traffic laws, drivers must adhere to rules and avoid making mistakes that lead to accidents, and pedestrians should abide by the designated walking areas in order to prevent harming themselves in a run-over accident.

In an effort to promote the framework, strengthen community outreach, and benefit from the inherent values of the society, the directorate has launched an awareness program through public councils in order to clearly and constructively explain the negative human, economic, and social impacts caused by traffic accidents. The program aligns with the Ministry of Interior’s strategy of traffic safety in order to bring positive results and reduce traffic accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries, and to also increase the influential roles of society and families in traffic safety.”

The program also sheds light on some of the negative practices of the youth, such as reckless driving and drifting, and emphasizes the importance of the society in reducing such practices and promoting the society’s traffic culture and awareness.
