MoI Turns off Lights and Illuminates Candles to Celebrate Earth Hour

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, March 20th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) participated in the “Earth Hour 2016” event by turning off the lights in a number of affiliated buildings. The participation in the event comes as part of the global campaign that aims to raise awareness about global warming, energy saving, and environmental protection.

The Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ), in coordination with the Environment Protection Society, participated in the event by shutting their lights off at 8:30 pm for an hour yesterday (Saturday).

HE Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, stressed that the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ is keen to participate in the event annually. He noted that the participation embodies the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s desire to apply the best green practices, preserve the environment, prevent pollution, and promote environmental performance nationwide.

“This participation highlights the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ’s leading role as a distinguished governmental entity that sets an example for other governmental institutes, especially in relation to social and environmental responsibilities,” he added. “This participation helps preserve natural resources to support sustainability for future generations. The Abu Dhabi Police have adopted a series of mechanisms and policies related to reducing the consumption of water, electricity, fuel, and paper usage.”

He noted that this event is a message to society to limit energy consumption, not as a possibility, but as a necessity in order to preserve the biological diversity and avoid the consequences of global warming, as well as to raise the awareness of all segments of society.

He expressed gratitude to the Environment Friends Society (EFS) for their participation with the Abu Dhabi Police to spread and promote environmental awareness and for their distinguished participation in the “Earth Hour” event. He expressed his happiness in the wide interaction and keenness to preserve the environment and reduce energy consumption, as environmental awareness and individual participation are starting points to the success of such initiatives.

The Directorate General of Civil Defense participated by shutting off the lights in all civil defense centers for an hour at 8:30 pm as part of the global campaign.

The civil defense staff participated in a public event held for the occasion at Mushrif Central Park in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Majid Entertainment.

Major General Jassem Muhammad Al Marzouqui, Civil Defense Commander-in-Chief at the MoI reiterated the keenness of the Directorate General of Civil Defense to adopt the best environmental solutions and green applications. This is to preserve a sustainable environment and promote the quality of life in the UAE. This eagerness stems from the “UAE Vision 2021,” as the civil defense aspires to promote positive practices to enhance the environmental performance in handling fires to reduce the negative impacts, and preserve lives and a sustainable environment for generations to come.
