The Government of Indonesia, UNESCO, Panasonic Join Hands to Support Environmental Conservation and Education for the Next Generation

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Friday, December 19th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Ministry of Culture and Elementary and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia, PT. Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko (Persero)[*1], the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Jakarta, and Panasonic Corporation signed a four-way Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 9 to promote "conservation and awareness raising for the protection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites" and "education and cultural activities aimed at sustainable development for young people in the vicinity of the Borobudur, Prambanan, Ratu Boko sites in Indonesia." The signing marked the launch of the following joint projects.

Donation of LED projectors to illuminate Prambanan Temple Compounds World Heritage Site

A total of 16 LED light projectors have been donated to Prambanan Temple Compounds, which were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 1991. The Prambanan site previously used halogen (HID) lamps for illuminating the compounds, but replacing these lamps with LED projectors will reduce energy consumption by approximately 30%[*2]. The LED projectors also turn on instantaneously, and their long life can significantly lower maintenance burden by reducing the need for replacement.

The Prambanan Temple Compounds consist of a group of Hindu temples with characteristically tall and small turrets, is known as one of the biggest temple complexes in Java. Built in the 9th century during the Hindu period in Indonesia, it was designed as three concentric squares. With over 500 temples, Prambanan Temple Compounds represents not only an architectural and cultural treasure, but also standing as a proof of a significant religious peaceful cohabitation. With the new LED illuminations donated by Panasonic to enlighten the main three Temples within the Compounds, it is foreseen that it will contribute to the promotion of this World Heritage site and its surrounding environment.

Education and cultural activities aimed at sustainable development for young people in the vicinity of the Borobudur and Prambanan compounds

Two joint educational programs for local stakeholders and communities, including youth and creative industry producers living around Borobudur and Prambanan areas, will be conducted in partnership with all stakeholders including local government, schools, relevant business network for the creative industry promotion, over the course of one year: "Youth Forum on safeguarding World Heritage on sustainable development, green technologies, creative economies and mitigating natural disasters" and "Capacity Building Training for Youth for the Development of Creative Industries and Sustainable Tourism."

The programs aim to increase public awareness about the importance of safeguarding efforts for the World Heritage sites and provide livelihood development opportunities for youth through educational and training programs on cultural industries.

Through this MoU, the four parties will contribute to the conservation of World Heritage sites and the global environment at large, and support education for the next generation of young people.

InnoTrans 2014

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Singapore Rail Engineering Pte. Ltd. (SRE) and Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) have decided to setup a joint venture to market and supply propulsion systems using Toshiba’s Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) technology. The joint venture agreement was signed today at InnoTrans, the international transport technology trade fair taking place in Berlin this week. The new company will be called Railise Ptd. Ltd.

Tests have confirmed that Toshiba’s PMSM technology will cut the power consumption of SMRT’s first generation trains by 30%. The technology is also maintenance friendly, and Toshiba is targeting noise level reductions of up to 12 dB.

Mr. Toshio Masaki, Senior Executive Vice President, Toshiba Corporation, noted, “This move sets the stage for working with SMRT and SRE to take our PMSM system into the global market. PMSM is a significant advance in train drive systems that cuts energy consumption and noise while minimizing maintenance downtime. Today’s agreement will allow us to work closely together to develop new markets for earth-friendly transportation.”

Incorporated in June 2014 as a wholly owned subsidiary of SMRT Corporation Ltd (S53.SG), SRE offers a full suite of products, solutions and services that aim to help mass transit operators run their network better. SRE operates under the founding principle that it will only market products and solutions that are validated and used by Singapore’s leading operator SMRT.

Mr. Mario Favaits, Managing Director of SRE, said, “We are excited that SMRT is relying on Railise to re-traction its first and second generation trains using PMSM technology. Through these projects, Railise will acquire unique systems integration skills allowing Singapore to develop an indigenous rail engineering capability. The first train is expected to hit the commercial tracks in Q2 2015 and from Q4 2015 onwards we will be looking at securing field trials abroad.”

Mr. Desmond Kuek, President and Group CEO, SMRT Corporation, said, “As Asian countries enlarge their rail networks to meet the urgent transportation needs of their rapidly growing urban populations, we see significant potential across the entire rail engineering value chain. Setting up SRE as an independent company positions SMRT favourably, both in terms of leading the growth of Singapore’s indigenous rail engineering capability to meet the needs of an expanding domestic rail network, and in seizing global market opportunities. Our partnership with Toshiba is an important step in this direction, and we are pleased to be able to work jointly to promote the PMSM system to operators.”
