Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, October 22nd 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate carried out a successful mock drill to extinguish a “fire” and evacuate the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. The drill, which was conducted in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC), aims at boosting the efficiency and capacity of the various national institutions and entities in dealing with emergencies. It is also designed with a view to assess the readiness, preparedness and efficiency of the security and safety teams operating within the various companies across the country in handling incidents and emergencies, and to promote better coordination with various competent departments and institutions.

Colonel Juma Salem Al Dahmani, Acting Director of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense, stressed that the drill is in pursuance of the Civil Defense General Directorate’s efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property. It also aims to enhance training efficiency, readiness, and qualification of emergency teams through scenarios and drills, to assess their readiness to deal with accidents and reduce response time for emergency calls, with a view to achieve the coveted goals.

Teams from the Al Bateen and Al Qubaisat Civil Defense stations, the field hospital, the Ambulance Section took part in the drill, along with patrols from the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police; and officers from the Red Crescent and the National Emergency Response Program “SANID”.

As per the scenario, the Abu Dhabi Police’s Operations Room received a tip-off on the outbreak of the “fire” at 9:00 am. As soon as the fire alarm sounded, emergency teams immediately rushed to the site and evacuated the building in record time, pending the arrival of the competent police entities, the Civil Defense and backup entities that handled the incident efficiently. According to the training scenario, 71 visitors were evacuated from the building, while paramedics provided first aid care to six people who ‘fainted’ at the incident site.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid Al Zaabi, Head of Strategy and Performance Development at the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate, who supervised the operation, lauded the efforts of all entities that took part in the drill, led by Lieutenant Colonel Tariq Al Shareef, Head of the Operations Department at the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate. Moreover, he praised the cooperation between the various entities, which contributed to the success of the drill.

For his part, Ahmed Al Obaidli, Acting Executive Director of Operations at ADNEC, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Civil Defense General Directorate and all staff members who conducted the drill with a high degree of professionalism and proficiency according to preset plans. Moreover, he thanked all federal and local institutions that contributed to the success of this distinguished drill.

In conclusion, he indicated that this drill is an opportunity to test the general contingency plan of ADNEC, assess the efficiency and effectiveness of contingency plans designed for dealing with public incidents during various events, such as exhibitions, conferences and meetings, and to test the readiness of relevant parties that are cooperating according to ADNEC’s contingency plan. He also noted that the drill aims to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the parties involved in carrying out the drill according to the scenario.
