MoI Qualifies Personnel to Receive Human Rights Diploma

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, December 10th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

In a first of its kind initiative, a number of employees of the Ministry of Interior are to earn a vocational diploma in the field of human rights. The initiative is conducted in cooperation with accredited specialized centers and with highly qualified and experienced instructors in the field of law and human rights.

“Qualifying personnel of the Ministry of Interior with this diploma coincides with the directives of the higher leadership to dedicate attention to the subject of human rights,” said Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nekhairah, Head of Human Rights Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. “This effort additionally supports the objective to spread the culture of human rights with our national personnel; of whom are capable of handling this topic in the various police leaderships of the Ministry of Interior in a way that adheres to national legislation and international conventions.”

According to Colonel Mohammed Al Shehhi, Deputy Head of the Human Rights Department and Head of the Strategic Initiatives Supervisory Team; the staff members are participating in an intensive academic program for nine weeks. The program consists of three stages: preliminary, intermediate, and advanced; each of which includes theoretical and practical lectures that focuses on various fields of law and international conventions, preparing international reports, and learning about the role of the national and international authorities in protecting human rights. The program additionally highlights the link between police work and human rights.

“The staff members are participating in a number of seminars and workshops that have recently been organized under the umbrella of the Ministry and other parties in the UAE,” he said. Colonel Al Shehhi additionally explained that the diploma falls within the programmed time frame of the initiative; which aims to prepare national staff members as human rights specialists in accordance with the national legislation and international conventions. “This initiative has been an active process since the beginning of 2014,” he said.

For his part, Major Abdurrahman Jassim Al Dhaheri explained that following the diploma stage, the trainees will practically apply their knowledge throughout the UAE in the coming period by training with police departments and national agencies working in the field of human rights.   “Following the period of practical application, the participants will then be sent to train with international institutions such as the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) and the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which will prepare trainees to become highly qualified lecturers in the field of human rights and spread and promote this culture,” he concluded.
