Ministry Of Interior Honors Winners of Distinguished Scholarship Award

Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, attended a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Interior to honor winners of the first edition of the Distinguished Scholarship Award. The ceremony, held in the presence of Her Excellency Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, President of the Federal National Council at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Abu Dhabi, aims at honoring Emirati scholarship students from government and private agencies.

His Highness Sheikh Saif awarded the Medal of Community Service to the honorees. He called upon them to be best representatives of their country and to reflect a bright civilized image of the UAE while studying abroad. He also urged them to make the most of this opportunity to gain further academic and cultural attainment, in a way that would positively impact their future professional lives and allow them to show gratitude to their generous bountiful country that has spared no effort to cater to their every need. Sheikh Saif also called upon the scholarship students to preserve the authentic values that have been passed from the ancestors and to always behave in a way that would reflect the true civilized image of the UAE and its people.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ali Bin Daen Al Ghafli, Head of the Organizational Excellence Department at the Ministry of Interior, asserted that the award is an addition to the myriad of successes the UAE government is seeking to achieve at all levels in the march towards excellence, by encouraging teamwork and dedication. “The award aims to introduce UAE scholarship students studying around the world, especially the talented and creative students, and to encourage them to show creativity and innovation in police and security fields, such as Traffic, Civil Defense and Correctional Establishments, as well as non-security fields that serve institutional work. It also reflects the honorable representation of the UAE abroad,” he said.

“The UAE youths’ minds and intellectual abilities provide a springboard for success towards progress and development for the UAE society,” added Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Al Ghafli. He also noted that the award, a first-of-its-kind at the countrywide level and aims to encourage distinguished and innovative scholarship students to make creative and innovative contributions in public and private sectors and would serve government work.

Adding further, Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Al Ghafli said that since the launch of the award, a number of visits were conducted to countries with the largest number of scholarship students in order to spread the Award’s conditions and criteria. Moreover, the Award’s guidelines were posted on the Ministry of Interior’s website; links to the award’s portal on the UAE embassies’ websites were included and text messages were sent via social media to encourage students to participate in the award. “An internal team of specialized auditors from the Ministry of Interior was formed to receive candidates’ applications and evaluate them in complete transparency and impartiality. The team carried out direct and remote interviews with the participating students and selected the distinguished students.

The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by recitations from the Holy Quran. Then, the scholarship students gave an overview of their experiences within the award categories in the field of Innovative Ideas and National Representation.

Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior presented prizes to winners of the Innovative Ideas Award. Student Dr. Rashid Hamdan Al Ghaferi, PhD in Criminal Genetics - UK ranked first for his invention of a new male DNA profile superior to any other male DNA; making it a vital important technique in criminal matters. Dr. Rashid Hamdan Al Ghaferi said that he filed for an international patent and published more than 7 scientific papers in the most prestigious universities.

Student Dr. Zainab Mohammed Al Sharif, Molecular Biology - UK, took second place for her idea to establish a “Tumors’ Bank”, which includes a documented database tackling the most prevalent genetic defects and tumors in the United Arab Emirates. The idea is new and unprecedented.

Student Mahfouz Salem Al Shammakh, Industrial Engineering BSc – Australia, ranked third. His father received the prize on his behalf, for his invention on copper-alloy use in hospitals on hospital beds and doorknobs, to introduce atoms in a bacterium.

HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed also presented the National Representation Award to the top three winners. Student Noura Nasser Al Karbi, PHD in International Relations- Spain came in first place for her honorable representation of the UAE in regional and Arab events. Student Al Karbi landed the first position in the Distinguished Arab Youth Award, for her distinguished achievements, notably obtaining 51 local and international appreciation certificates, taking part in volunteer work and international conferences, and for her academic excellence.

Student Reem Suleiman Nasser Muhammad Al Naqbi, Electronic Engineering- Japan, ranked in second place for her honorable representation of the UAE and her distinguished participation in cultural events to introduce the Emirati and GCC culture in Japan.  She was also honored for her excellence in the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test and her academic achievement. She impressed the audience by greeting them fluently in Japanese.

Student Ibtisam Ali Al Tunaiji, Masters’ in Leadership Sciences- USA, and Teaching Assistant at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) ranked in third place. Ibtissam was recognized for her valuable representation of the UAE; introducing the culture and customs of the Emirati society by linking the national identity with innovation; and introducing the US society to the successes and achievements made by the UAE.

The ceremony was attended by H.E Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development; H.E Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Sheikha Lubna bint Khaled Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development; H.E Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education; H.E Ahmed bin Juma Al Zaabi, Deputy Minister of Presidential Affairs; H.E Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of the Dubai Police and General Security; H.E Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Health Authority; Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Sha’far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior; and Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ali Bin Daen Al Ghafli, Head of the Organizational Excellence Department at the Ministry of Interior, noted that the distinguished winning scholarship students competed as part of two categories. Three students won the Innovative Ideas Award and three other students won the National Representation Award.

The Innovative Ideas Award is granted to students who submit an idea that contributes to realizing the overall objectives of the UAE government, and the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Interior in particular. The proposed idea should be simple, applicable; it should also meet the standards of innovation and excellence and achieve a positive impact on society.

On the other hand, the National Representation Award is offered to the winning students who best represent the UAE and reflects the Emirati identity by respecting the laws and regulations of their educational entity, by participating in community-based activities and environmental volunteer work, as well as excelling in their academic and scientific attainment.

All Emirati scholarship students studying abroad from the Ministry of Interior or other governmental or private institution in the UAE worldwide are eligible to participate in the Award. The application file must be prepared by the candidates or by experienced competent people.
