International Workshop on United Nations’ Human Rights Standards at the MoI

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Friday, May 8th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Ministry of Interior organized an international training workshop on the United Nations standards and norms in human rights and international justice.

The three-day workshop was organized by the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The inauguration ceremony that took place at Hotel Centro Sharjah was attended by Brigadier Saif Mohammad Al Ziri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police.

Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nehkairah, Head of Human Rights Department, Ministry of Interior said that the workshop reflects the firm commitment of the Ministry of Interior to develop the skills of its staff members and build their knowledge of human rights. “The Ministry is also keen to strengthen international partnerships with the United Nations and its different agencies related to human rights and criminal justice,” said Brigadier Nehkairah.

Adding further, Brigadier Nehkairah noted that the workshop focused on training a group of first responders, in charge of law enforcement for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, with special focus on Rights of Women, Children and other Vulnerable Groups. The workshop was also intended to acquaint participants with the United Nations criminal justice standards, which regulate the functions of the Punitive and Correctional Institutions Department with respect to adults and juvenile welfare centers for minors.

For his part, Judge Dr. Hatem Aly, Representative of UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) to GCC countries, hailed the Ministry of Interior’s commitment to encouraging human rights education amongst its staff members. Moreover, he underlined the importance of hosting such interactive workshops between lecturers and participants, and noted that it comes within the framework of the partnership between the United Nations and the Ministry of Interior.

The workshop tackled a wide range of topics, including the UN international norms and standards on criminal justice and the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, through effective law enforcement; and the need to call upon the United Nations’ partners to provide a regional role model in law enforcement and criminal justice.

The workshop also reviewed the human rights’ standards that are directly related to police work, with special focus on women and children victims; as well as the international standards on effective police response when dealing with women and children victims, with the participation of experts from the United Nations.
