Health Education Program at Al Ain Residency

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, October 22nd 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department in Al Ain organized a health awareness program to mark World Food Day in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company – SEHA and the Community Nutrition Center at Tawam Hospital. As part of the program, Nada Zuhair Al Adeeb, Director of Community Nutrition at Tawam Hospital, delivered a lecture as part of a health education workshop for employees, which highlighted the importance of healthy nutrition.

The opening session was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Sultan Al Dhaheri, Deputy Director of the Residency and Foreigners Affairs Department in Al Ain, along with officers and staff members from the department. Lieutenant Colonel Al Dhaheri reiterated the department’s commitment to spreading awareness about healthy nutrition and its impact on the health and well-being of individuals and society.

In her lecture, Nada Zuhair Al Adeeb, Director of Community Nutrition at Tawam Hospital, tackled the importance of breakfast as it brings a host of health benefits to the human body.  She said, “Studies have shown that people who skip breakfast would cause the person to take carbohydrates later during the day more than those who take breakfast.” Additionally, she noted that daily coffee consumption may reduce the risk of diabetes. She also shed the light on the various health benefits of green tea, as well as the methods of preparing green tea and green tea recipes.

Studies have found that green tea drinkers experienced an increase in the activation of the dorso-lateral prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain associated with working memory, which humans need for problem solving and focus.

She said, “Green tea contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, which widen blood vessels, speeding the supply of blood to the brain. Green tea may also help prevent neurotransmitters involved in brain functioning, like dopamine and epinephrine, from degrading. It also inhibits senile plaques from depositing in the brain, which impairs cognition.”

Adding further, Nada Zuhair Al Adeeb encouraged healthy alternatives to fast food such as fresh fruits, which contain vitamins, minerals and dietary fibers. She also noted that unhealthy eating habits may affect blood sugar levels and mood swings.

She also gave an overview of the dietary guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); in addition to the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines for the Arab Gulf Countries issued by the Arab Center for Nutrition.  She also stressed the importance of gradual exercising with personal trainer supervision.

It is worth mentioning that the audience interacted positively with the activities of this health awareness day. They were also keen on undergoing the medical check-ups provided on-site that included measuring blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. They were also given awareness guidelines and pamphlets.
