ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, May 22nd 2016 [ME NewsWire]
The Civil Defense Department in Umm Al-Quwain conducted a successful evacuation drill for rescuing three schools located in the old industrial area of Umm Al-Quwain.
The evacuation drill scenarios in the schools started on Thursday morning after receiving an alert from the operations room. The alert reported 10 medium-to-serious injuries among the students, as their school experienced a virtual earthquake. The specialized teams of civil defense and emergency services were mobilized to the accident site and the situation was handled professionally and efficiently.
Colonel Hassan Ali Bin Sorm, Head of Umm Al-Quwain Civil Defense Department, said that the drill aimed at measuring the readiness and responsiveness of the civil defense teams in dealing with emergencies, in accordance with the Ministry of Interior (MoI) strategy. It also aimed to review student and administrative staff alertness, as well as that of the supporting entities, to the relevant procedures during emergencies, including getting to know the safe pathways to reach the assembly point outside the building to guarantee everyone’s safety and security.
He highlighted the eagerness of the Department to review the outcomes of the drill, negative and positive, and assess the experience with a view to developing and increasing procedural efficiency and removing any obstacles that could hinder the evacuation process. The Department is also keen on introducing every improvement that can: boost the efficiency of the civil defense teams; reduce the response time; handle incidents with the lowest possible losses; preserve lives and property; and deal with the aftermath of the incident.
Several entities participated in the evacuation drill, which included: The Umm Al-Quwain Police; the National Coordination and Response Office; the Emirates Red Crescent; the Department of Public Works and Services; the National Ambulance; the Umm Al-Quwain General Hospital; Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital Umm Al-Quwain; and Emirates Transport. It also received support from the Al Jazirah Al Hamra Center of the Ras Al Khaimah Civil Defense Department; Al Hamriya Center of the Sharjah Civil Defense Department; the Federal Electricity and Water Authority in the Western Region (B); and the Umm Al-Quwain Educational Zone.
