Asian Gang Arrested for Stealing Electric Cables in Abu Dhabi and RAK

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, April 7th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

The Capital Police Directorate arrested a gang composed of six Asian nationals; including one illegal resident; for stealing electric cables in Abu Dhabi and Ras Al khaimah, to illegally sell them as scrap.

Elaborating on the details of the case, Colonel Ahmed Saif bin Zeitoun Al Muhairi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, said that several reports of theft were received by the directorate from a facility located in Abu Dhabi, which triggered an investigation. Preliminary inspection showed that the theft was carried out by a specialized gang, using a well-planned criminal method.

Colonel Al Muhairi explained that a deliberate security plan was developed, which led to the arrest of the suspects involved in this crime which undermines the basic components of the national economy. The suspects were identified in a short period, after gathering the necessary information. He also pointed that the police managed to retrieve some of the 100,000 AED worth stolen cables, weighing 500 Kg.

Colonel Al Muhairi, hailed the efforts of the work team, whose members worked in mutual security coordination, by intensifying the search and investigation efforts, which led to the arrest of the gang. He added that the gang targeted isolated and unguarded site and climbed the facility’s wall under the cover of night, to carry out their crime; using metal cutters to cut high-pressure cables and transporting them using a 14-passenger minivan.

Confronted with irrefutable evidence, the thieves, aged between 25 and 29 years, confessed to forming a gang and carrying out the thefts after to steal power cables in a number of areas in Abu Dhabi, RAK, and Al Ain and selling them as scrap to make illegal profits. The suspects have been referred along with the seized cables to the competent authorities to further investigate the circumstances of the case.

Col. Al Muhairi stressed the keenness of the Abu Dhabi Police, based on the strategy of the Ministry of Interior,  which has pledged to fulfill several priorities, namely to prevent and reduce crime; in order to enhance the security of society and its members. He called upon all establishments to exercise caution, to secure their facilities against thefts, and safeguard their properties by providing sufficient security personnel, and not leave them unattended especially in construction sites. He also urged members of the public to quickly report any criminal incident or illegal violations that may undermine the safety and stability of society, stressing that the time factor contributes to the prompt arrest of the culprits in a record time and to prevent all types of crime.
