The Ministry of Interior, represented by the Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police, recently organized a number of medical activities as a part of the awareness campaign to fight breast cancer and chronic diseases. The activities, organized in cooperation with the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and in coordination with various police departments,  aim to encourage MoI staff members and their families to conduct regular medical checkups.

The Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police, represented by the Health Education Branch, carried out an awareness campaign to acquaint police staff members with the importance of prevention against chronic diseases. The campaign, which was held at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, included a number of preventive medical tests that everyone should have to avoid diseases and detect them at an early stage.  

Colonel Jassim Al Tunaiji, Head of Medical Services Department of Abu Dhabi Police, said: “The campaign is consistent with the department’s aspirations to provide the best medical services and guidance to its staff members. It aims to encourage individuals to practice behavior that would positively impact their health; and to adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent diseases and possible complications that result from chronic diseases.” He confirmed that the Medical Services Department seeks to disseminate and enhance health education across the country.

He also noted that the Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police dedicates significant attention to the health of its staff members, their families and community members in general. “To this end, it strives to organize awareness and education campaigns throughout the year, and to participate in various medical events, including joining world countries in marking the Breast Cancer Awareness campaigns during the month of October, through introductory and preventive campaigns regarding this disease,” he said.

For his part, Captain Dr. Ali Omar Al Menhali, Health Education Branch Manager, said that participation in the breast cancer medical awareness campaign includes providing advice and instructions; introducing the methods of breast self-examinations; and the importance of early detection. “The campaign falls in line with the Medical Services’ initiatives and outreach methodology and aims to enhance knowledge and behaviors that reduce the risks of developing cancer, and increase the chances for recovery if detected early, in addition to encouraging positive approaches towards preventive measures such as early detection and self- examination,” he added.

The Media and Public Relations Section at the Naturalization, Residency and Ports Sector organized an awareness lecture about the risks of breast cancer and the proper ways to fight this disease. The lecture, which was held at Al Ittihad hall at the Naturalization Residency and Ports Affairs Department, was presented by Lt. Colonel Dr. Najla Asaad Taher, Head of the Initiative of Early Detection of Chronic Diseases and Cancer.

Dr. Najla indicated that the campaign, which aims to spread awareness about breast cancer and other chronic diseases, is a part of the methodology adopted by the Ministry of Interior and Abu Dhabi Police and in response to the directives of high-ranking officials, which stipulate the importance of enhancing health awareness amongst staff members of the different police departments and their families.

In her lecture, Dr. Najla confirmed that early detection of breast cancer provides a 98% chance of recovery, and reduces treatment-related side effects. She said: “According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with high incidence rates.”

Towards the end of the lecture, the lecturer answered the audience questions and inquiries; educational health brochures about cancer prevention and self-examination guidelines were distributed to attendees.

In the same context, the Medical Services Section at the Al Ain Police Directorate organized a medical seminar titled “Breast Cancer Facts” at the Al Ain Officers’ Club Theater.

Dr. Ban Nabhan, Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialist at the Medical Services Section, stressed the importance of awareness about breast cancer risks, because the risk of developing breast cancer increases as women get older. She also gave important medical details related to the disease and symptoms.

Dr. Ban emphasized the need to avoid neglecting breast cancer early screening due to its major importance in detecting the disease before it spreads to other parts of the body, especially for women with a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

In conclusion, she highlighted the need to follow a healthy diet; to exercise regularly; and to avoid smoking and psychological distress in general. She also urged everyone to head to the nearest clinic and undergo periodic medical tests.

As a part of the campaign, Dr. Rashida Mohamed Abbas, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Medical Services Department at Dubai Police, delivered an educational lecture at the Forensic Evidence Hall at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters about early detection of breast cancer and the risks of developing this disease.

She said: “Early detection of breast cancer provides a 98% chance of recovery, and reduces treatment-related side effects.” She also noted that the World Health Organization has declared breast cancer as the most common cancer in women worldwide, due to its high incidence rates.

Adding further, she said: “Even though adopting preventive strategies can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, it is not possible for people who get cancer diagnosed late to fully recover. Diagnosis of breast cancer at an early tumor stage remains vital,” she said.

In conclusion, she stressed the importance of following a healthy and balanced diet by eating plenty of vegetables and fruits; eliminating or reducing consumption of red or processed meats, fatty foods and soft drinks; and abstaining from smoking. “Research has shown that physical activity reduces the risk of developing cancer significantly,” she said.
